The Rays victory over the Red Sox on Friday was in front of a sellout crowd of 6,629, the largest crowd ever at Charlotte Sports Park. The previous stadium attendance record was 6,157 set on April 12, 1991 in a Florida State League home-opening doubleheader between the Charlotte Rangers and Baseball City Royals.
The largest crowd to see a Texas Rangers game there was 5,909 on March 23, 1989, Rangers vs. Blue Jays (Rangers trained in Charlotte County from 1987-2002). The Rays eclipsed that mark in Wednesday’s Grapefruit League opener vs. the Reds with 6,028.
The largest crowd to see the Rays play at Al Lang Field in their 11 years in St. Pete was 6,759 in the finale there on March 28th last spring vs. the Reds. The Rays All-Time Spring Training record now stands at 136-168-11.
