The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs won their second game in a row by defeating the Sarasota Reds 2-1 in a low scoring pitching duel between David Newmann and Jeremy Horst.
Sarasota jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning with back to back singles by Justin Reed and Alex Buchholz. Yonder Alonso followed with a sac fly to left to score Reed. But the Stone Crabs followed with back to back singles of their own by Emeel Salem and Matthew Hall. Greg Sexton drove in the run to tie the game 1-1.
The Stone Crabs broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth inning, Matthew Hall drew a walk to start the inning and then stole second base. Greg Sexton laid down a sac bunt to advance Hall to third and Matt Fields brought him home with a sac fly to center. Charlotte took the lead 2-1.
David Newmann got the first win of his career by pitching 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 5 and walking 4. Paul Phillips pitched a scoreless inning and recorded his second hold of the season. Matt Gorgon got the save by pitching 2 hitless innings and recording 2 strikeouts. Sarasota’s Jeremy Horst was the losing pitcher giving up 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 5 and walking 3 in 6 innings of work. Logan Ondrusek and Ben Davis combined for 2 innings of scoreless relief for the Reds.
What Went Right: Pitching; only giving up 1 run on 5 hits while recording 7 strikeouts combined between Newmann, Phillips and Gorgen.
What Went Wrong: Both Greg Sexton and Matt Fields were hitless on the night ending both hitting streaks.
A Look Ahead: The Charlotte Stone Crabs begin a three game series against the St. Lucie Mets. Jeremy Hall (1-1) will face Angel Calero (1-0) tomorrow night at Charlotte Sports Park.
