The Mobile Bay Bears used a dominating pitching performance to turn aside the Biscuits, 6-1, in game four of a five-game series on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium. The BayBears wasted little time in assuming the lead, plating two runs in the first inning off of Biscuits' starter Ryan Morse. Mark Hallberg got Mobile started with a one-out single, followed by a single for Gerardo Parra. Ricardo Sosa then doubled to left-center field to score both runners and give the BayBears the lead, 2-0.
Morse (0-3) settled in to keep Mobile at bay the next three innings, but took the loss after departing following the fourth inning. Brandon Mann followed Morse into the game and conceded four more Mobile runs in the top of the sixth inning. The inning was highlighted for the BayBears by a two-run double for Orlando Mercado.
Meanwhile, Mobile starter Bryan Augenstein was on cruise-control. He completed a perfect first trip through the Biscuits order and stretched a personal 17 1/3 consecutive scoreless inning streak into the sixth inning. Montgomery finally got on the board in the sixth when Matt Spring doubled to lead off the inning and scored a batter later on a Desmond Jennings RBI-groundout.
Ultimately, Augenstein (3-0) worked seven three-hit innings, conceding just the one run en route to his third victory of the season. Kyler Newby closed out the win with two scoreless innings of relief.
With the win, the BayBears improved to a league-best 12-3 and claimed the five-game series by taking three of the first four games. Montgomery has now fallen six games off the pace set by the front-running BayBears in the South division.
The series will conclude on Friday night at Riverwalk Stadium at 7:05 p.m. LHP Jason Cromer (0-0, ---) will rejoin the Biscuits and make the start against RHP Cody Evans (2-0, 3.24).
