The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs avoided a sweep by beating the Fort Myers Miracle 5-3, picking up their first win in franchise history.
The Stone Crabs got off to an early lead in the first inning thanks to a three run homer by Matt Fields. Nevin Ashley follows the lead by cranking a solo homer in the second to put the Stone Crabs ahead 4-0. Then they added to their lead with another run in the fourth when Emeel Salem hit a sac fly to score Cody Cipriano.
Fort Myers got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Steve Singleton hit a single to right field, scoring Ben Revere. The Miracle tried to mount a comeback in the bottom of the eighth with RBI singles by Estarlin De Los Santos and Joe Benson. But Paul Phillips got out of the jam and kept Fort Myers from doing any more damage.
Jeremy Hall (1-0) got the win; pitching 5 innings, giving 4 hits while recording 3 strike outs and 1 unearned run. Austin Hinkle came on in the ninth, holding the Miracle in check and picking up his first save of the season. Michael McCardell was the losing pitcher for Fort Myers.
What Went Right: The offense; 5 runs off 11 hits. Matt Fields; 2-4, 1 HR, 3 RBI’s and a run scored. Cody Cipriano; 2-4 with a double and a run scored. Jeremy Hall; 5 IP, 0 unearned runs, 2 K’s.
What Went Wrong: Leaving runners in scoring position; the Stone Crabs were 1-6 with runners in scoring position.
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs (1-3) head to the east coast for a three game series against the St. Lucie Mets (2-2). Darin Downs (0-1) is the probable starter for Charlotte and he will oppose Eric Niesen (0-1).
