The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs picked up their second win of the inaugural season by defeating the St. Lucie Mets 4-1 at Tradition Field. St. Lucie jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning off an RBI double by Zachary Lutz.
But it was all Charlotte for the remainder of the game. Matt Fields hit a two run homer in the fourth inning, his third of the season. Cody Cipriano brought home Shawn O'Malley in the sixth inning to put the Stone Crabs ahead 3-1. Nevin Ashley contributed to the lead in the ninth inning with an RBI double.
Darin Downs (1-0) picked up the victory, pitching five innings with eight strikeouts while surrendering one run. Kevin Boggan, Brian Flores and Paul Phillips all pitched scoreless innings and each recorded a hold. Matt Gorgen got the save for the Stone Crabs, his first of the season. Eric Niesen (0-1) was the losing pitcher for St. Lucie.
What Went Right: The pitching; Stone Crabs pitchers picked up a combined 15 strikeouts while only giving up 1 run on 11 hits. Matt Fields; 2 run home run, now leads the league in HR's with 3.
What Went Wrong: Stephen Vogt and Pedro Powell were hitless in the game and on the season.
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs stay in St. Lucie for game two of the three game series. Alex Cobb (0-0) is scheduled to face Brad Holt (0-1).
