The Candidates: Shane Dyer, Frank De Los Santos, Jamie Bagley. Dyer and De Los Santos had very similar April stats, putting up equal numbers in: games started (4), innings pitched (20.0), home runs (1), walks (3), and strikeouts (12). Dyer gave up one less hit, but De Los Santos gave up one less earned run (and four less unearned), to lead in ERA 2.70 to 3.15. Bagley gave up no earned runs over 12.1 IP, recording four saves for the month. On the down side, Bagley only struck out 6 while walking 4.
The Winner: Frank De Los Santos, by a hair over Dyer. De Los Santos, 21 (3 1/2 months older than Dyer), was signed by Rays scout Junior Ramirez as a non-drafted free agent on February 7, 2006 out of the Dominican Republic. Last year for the Hudson Valley Renegades he went 4-5 with a 5.40 ERA in 11 starts. In 56.2 IP he struck out 44 and walked 16.
