The Game: After a one hour and twenty nine minute rain delay, baseball action returned to Charlotte Sports Park as the Charlotte Stone Crabs defeated the Palm Beach Cardinals 2-1. Palm Beach got on the scoreboard first off an RBI single by Domnit Bolivar that put Palm Beach ahead 1-0 in the top of the fifth.
The Cardinals held the lead until the bottom of the eighth inning. Emeel Salem led off the inning with a walk and advance to second on a steal, his eight stolen base of the season. Shawn O’Malley singled to give Stone Crabs runners at first and second. Greg Sexton lays down a sac bunt but reaches first on a field error to load the bases. Matt Field hits sac fly to right that scores Salem. Cody Cipriano follows with a an RBI single to score O’Malley and put the Stone Crabs on top to stay 2-1.
Alex Cobb pitched 7 innings surrendering 1 run off 7 hits while striking out 4. The bullpen combined for 2 innings of no hit relief. Justin Garcia earned the win and Matt Gorgen the save. Adam Reifer was the losing pitcher for Palm Beach.
What Went Right: Greg Sexton; 2-3 on the night.
What Went Wrong: Omar Luna; continues to struggle 0-3 tonight.
A Look Ahead: The Charlotte Stone Crabs and Palm Beach Cardinals are back at it Thursday for game two of the three game series. Jesse Darcy (0-3) will face David Kopp (2-2).
