The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs used a late inning rally to break the tie and defeat the Jupiter Hammerheads 3-2 at Charlotte Sports Park, snapping a three game losing streak. The Hammerheads scored first in the top of the third inning as Osvaldo Martinez hit a solo home run to center. The Stone Crabs answered back in the bottom of the inning as Shawn O’Malley hit a line drive to center and was able to circle bases thanks to a fielding error by Mike Stanton.
The pitching for both teams kept the game tied until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Stone Crabs rallied to score two runs. Greg Sexton and Reid Fronk picked up RBI’s in the inning to put the Stone Crabs ahead 3-1. Jupiter scored a run in the ninth when Mike Stanton hit a solo homer but they were unable to collect any further runs and the Stone Crabs held on to win 3-2.
Alex Cobb pitched 5 innings giving up 1 run off 3 hits and striking out 4. Justin Garcia was the winning pitcher throwing 3 no hit innings while striking out 4. Matt Gorgen gave up his first run of the season allowing 1 run on 1 hit with 2 strike outs in recording the save. Steven Cishek was the losing pitcher for Jupiter.
What Went Right: Pitching; combined 10 strikeouts while only giving up 2 earned runs on 4 hits.
What Went Wrong: Omar Luna and Emeel Salem; continue to struggle at the plate, both hitless on the night and hitting under .200 for the season.
A Look Ahead: The Charlotte Stone Crabs and Jupiter Hammerheads are back at it again for game three of the series. Jesse Darcy (0-2) will pitch against Elih Villanueva (2-3).
