The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs moved into a tie for first place by defeating the Fort Myers Miracle 2-1 at Hammond Stadium. The Stone Crabs got out to an early lead in the fourth inning Matt Field drove home Shawn O’Malley and put the Stone Crabs ahead 1-0.
Charlotte added another run in the seventh inning as Nevin Ashley led off the inning with a triple and was drove home by Ryan Royster. Fort Myers scored their only run in the bottom of the ninth Chris Parmelee got aboard with a double to center and was brought home with an RBI single by Steven Singleton. Paul Phillips closed the door on the Miracle comeback and the Stone Crabs held on for the win 2-1.
Darin Down put on another quality start and improved to 4-0 on the season by pitching 6 shutout innings giving up 6 hits and striking out 2. Rayner Oliveros pitched 2 1/3 innings giving up 1 run on 1 hit striking out 3 while walking 2. Paul Phillips picked up his second save of the season going 2/3 inning giving up no runs on 1 hit while striking out 2 and walking 1. Carlos Gutierrez was the losing pitcher for Fort Myers.
What Went Right: Darin Downs; 6 IP, 0 Runs, 2K’s, improved to 4-0 and lowered ERA to 1.75.
What Went Wrong: Runners in scoring position; 0-6 with RISP
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs return home to face the Fort Myers Miracle in game two of the four game series. Alex Cobb (0-2) will face Deolis Guerra (2-1)
