I realize there is more to being a catcher than just the stats shown here, such as learning to call pitches, calming down pitchers, etc. And I also realize that many bases are stolen off the pitcher. With all that in mind, and remembering it's a small sample size of just 5 weeks of games, a few thoughts:
- What is going on in Bowling Green? Seven errors and 33 stolen bases allowed in 28 games. McCormick has also struggled at the plate (.155/.237/.262 in 84 AB's with a team leading 28 strikeouts). Jefferies has been solid with the bat (.270/.340/.337 in 89 AB's with 8 walks and only 10 strikeouts), and expect those numbers to improve as the season goes on.
- Why is Spring, with 17 steals allowed in 21 tries, continuing to get the majority of the playing time in Montgomery, it's certainly not for his bat (.177/.292/.258 in 62 AB's with 23 strikeouts)? To be fair, Paxton is hitting .188/.188/.188 in 16 AB's, and Albernaz is hitting .077/.250/.077 in 13 AB's.
- Maybe it's time to promote Ashley to Montgomery? On top of his defense he's hitting a solid .265/.346/.426 in 68 AB's.
- Jaso has been about as expected, throwing out 33% of base stealers but hitting .286/.348/.460 in 63 AB's.
Your thoughts?
Have you been reading my mind? Everything you mentioned in your blog is exactly what I've been thinking! But where would they put Spring? Make him a backup at Montgomery? Then where would Paxton, who is a very solid catcher, go? Maybe it's time for Mark Thomas to go go Bowling Green--bat seems to have come alive and he's got a phenomenal throwing arm. Just a few thoughts...
ReplyDeleteJust curious why you did not include Range? RF/G?
ReplyDeleteWould love to see an update of these stats that would now also include Hudson Valley, Princeton, and GCL.
