The Tampa Bay Rays have promoted OF Rashad Eldridge to the Durham Bulls from the Montgomery Biscuits. The 27 year-old has hit .284/.349/.352 with 10 stolen bases in 176 AB's for Montgomery this season.
The Rays have signed free agent OF Joe Gaetti and assigned him to the Biscuits. The 27 year-old has played for two teams already in 2009, the New Britain Rock Cats (AA Eastern League) and the Frisco RoughRiders (AA Texas League). For New Britain he hit .139/.179/.278 in 36 AB's, and for Frisco he batted .158/.346/.158 in 19 AB's. The son of former Major League infielder Gary Gaetti was originally drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the 12th round of the 2003 draft. Gaetti will be issued jersey number 36.
One other Biscuits note, OF Pedro Powell has changed uniform numbers from #20 to #1.
I'm confused-Gaetti is already 27 years old, has been on 2 teams this season, and batting average is low. Why is he going to the Biscuits? Has TB given up on Royster, Fronk, Salem and Matulia? I keep reading that TB releases this player and that player and then picks up other teams' releases who often don't pan out. I thought TB, with its original picks, was supposed to have one of the strongest farm systems. What's happening?
