The Candidates: Desmond Jennings, Rhyne Hughes. Jennings put up a line of .349/.389/.605 in 86 AB's and stole 6 bases in 7 tries. Of his 30 hits, 12 went for extra bases, including 3 home runs. Hughes hit for a .272/.372/.667 line in 81 AB's with 9 HR's. He also stole three bases without a caught stealing.
The Winner: Desmond Jennings. The 22 year-old was one of the top hitters in all of the minors in April, and most importantly, he stayed healthy. Last year for Vero Beach he was sidelined the first two months with a back injury. Then he lasted just 24 games before his left shoulder required season ending surgery, leaving him with a .259/.360/.412 line in 85 AB's with 2 HR's. He was drafted by the Rays out of Itawamba Community College in the 10th round of the 2006 draft.
