The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs beat the Jupiter Hammerheads 10-8 thanks in part by three home runs. The Stone Crabs jumped out to an early lead in the first inning with back to back home runs. The first was a two run shot by Matt Fields and was followed by a solo homer by Cody Cipriano, putting the Stone Crabs ahead 3-0.
The scoring continued in the second as Nevin Ashley drew a walk to start the inning. Omar Luna singled to put runners at first and second. Emeel Salem hit a two RBI double to score Ashley and Salem. The Stone Crabs added another run in the third when Nevin Ashley singled to center to score Cody Cipriano and Charlotte now had a 8-0 lead.
Jupiter got on the board in the bottom of the third. Gregory Burns led off the inning with a walk. The Stone Crabs committed two errors on the next play to allow Burns to score and Smelin Perez to reach first. Mike Stanton hit an RBI triple to score Perez and then came home himself off a RBI double by Miguel Fermin. The Hammerheads pulled closer to the lead 8-3.
The Hammerheads comeback continued in the bottom of the sixth inning. Hunter Mense led off the inning with a triple and scored off an RBI single by Jacob Blackwood. Gregory Burns doubled to right to score Thomas Hickman and advanced to third on an error by Shawn O’Malley. The Hammerheads got their third run of the inning off an RBI single by Smelin Perez. They now trail by two runs, 8-6.
Both teams added a run to their totals in both the seventh and eighth inning. The Stone Crabs got a run in the seventh off a sac fly by Greg Sexton to score Emeel Salem. Mike Stanton scored in the bottom of the seventh thanks in part by the Stone Crabs fourth error of the night. Shawn Williams tripled to lead off the eight and was driven home on a RBI single by Reid Fronk. A solo home run by Gregory Burns in the bottom of the eight was not enough as the Stone Crabs held on for the win 10-8.
Jeremy Hall pitched 4 innings giving up 3 run (2 of them earned) on 3 hits while striking out 3 and walking 2 in the start. Brian Flores followed with 1 2/3 innings giving up 3 runs on 4 hits. Paul Phillips collected the win by going 2 1/3 innings giving up 2 runs (1 of them earned) on 3 hits with 1 strikeout. Matt Gorgen pitched a no hit inning to record the save. Jeff Allison was the losing pitcher for Jupiter.
What Went Right: Cody Cipriano; extended his hitting streak to 6 games by going 1-1 with a home run.
What Went Wrong: Maintaining the lead; the Stone Crabs need to work on maintaining the lead throughout the whole game. Errors; 4 errors in the game.
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs play the Hammerheads in game two of the series. Darin Downs (4-0) will oppose Derrell McCall (0-1).
