[Via email from the Bowling Green Hot Rods' broadcaster Tom Gauthier.]Left hander Matt Moore allowed just one hit through 6.2 innings of work on Wednesday afternoon, eventually earning a no-decision in a 5-2 Hot Rods (32-34) win at Lexington. The victory snapped the Hot Rods five-game losing streak leaving them two games under .500 heading into the rubber game of the series on Thursday night at Applebee’s Park.
Moore started the game with a lead-off walk but picked off that base-runner one out later, starting a stretch where he would set down 15 in a row before a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh he got the first two outs on strikeouts, his ninth and tenth, before Brian Pellegrini single to left-center field to break up Moore’s no-hit bid.
Pellegrini’s single knocked Moore out of the game as the lefty finished with ten strikeouts. Chris Andujar came on next and surrendered back-to-back base hits, allowing Pellegrini to score the first run for Lexington. Moore’s final line read 6.2 IP, one hit, one run, two walks, and 10 strikeouts. In the month of June he is 1-0, having allowed five earned runs over 22.2 innings (1.99 ERA). Moore has also improved his strikeout-to-walk ratio, striking out 35 batters against just seven walks.
Andujar gave up another run in the eighth inning, coming on a two-out triple by Jay Austin to tie it at 2-2. Andujar’s first blown save cost Moore his chance at his fourth win of the season. However, Andujar picked up his league-leading eighth win (8-2) thanks to a three-run rally in the top of the ninth inning.
The winning frame, after the Legends tied it at two, began with a walk to Mike Sheridan courtesy of Arcenio Leon. He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Mike McCormick followed by an infield single from Jeremy Beckham, putting runners at first and third. Sheridan then scored the winning run on the very next pitch when Justin Reynolds squared to bunt, but took a wild pitch to the backstop giving the Hot Rods a 3-2 lead.
Reynolds eventually walked to force Leon from the game to bring on Michael Hacker. With runners at first and second, Jeremy Beckham was caught stealing for the second out, leaving Reynolds at second base for Anthony Scelfo. Scelfo drew a walk before Tim Beckham doubled them both in to give the Hot Rods a 5-2 lead.
Beckham now leads the Hot Rods with 35 RBI while Jake Jefferies is still second with 34 thanks to an RBI single in the fifth. Reynolds finished with a perfect day, going 2-2 with two walks, a run scored, and his 16th RBI of the season.
The final road game of the first half wraps up the series on Thursday night at Applebee’s Park. RHP Shane Dyer (1-4, 4.67) draws the start against Lexington LHP Brad Dydalewicz (3-1, 2.52).
