Brothers Tim and Jeremy Beckham combined for four hits and an RBI on Tuesday night, but the brothers couldn’t get much help as Lexington (34-31) beat the Hot Rods 5-3 to open a three-game series at Applebee’s Park. The loss is the Hot Rods (31-34) fifth straight, leaving them with an 0-4 record through the first four games of the final road trip in the first half of the season.

Jeremy had the more productive of the nights for the brothers, going 2-4 with an RBI triple as part of a two-run seventh inning. Jeremy picked up his fourth RBI on the triple, scoring Mike McCormick to cut a four-run deficit to three. He would score when the next batter, Robi Estrada, brought him in with an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to two runs.

Tim, meanwhile, picked up a first inning single but was stranded at second base. In the sixth he led off with his team-leading 15th double into the left field corner. But, for the second time in the game the Hot Rods would leave Beckham stranded, this time at third base. With two more hits Beckham bumped his team-best total to 64, raising his batting average to .294.

Lexington, meanwhile, took advantage of their opportunities, scoring all five of their runs with two outs. They started the scoring with back-to-back two-out doubles in the second against Hot Rod starter Nick Barnese. They added a run in the third after Barnese issued a two-out walk followed by consecutive singles, the latter from Ebert Rosario bumping the Legends lead to 2-0. Barnese (0-1) worked a scoreless fourth inning, leaving the game after four innings of two-run ball.

Lexington added a run in the fifth inning against Michael Jarman, again with two outs. After a walk and a balk put Brian Pellegrini at second base, Steve Brown hit a pop-up on the infield which fell in to score Pellegrini and give the Legends a 3-0 lead.

In the sixth, Pellegrini figured into another Lexington rally. Batting with the bases loaded he hit a ground ball to short stop, hustled to first base, and beat the throw from Tim Beckham, scoring two runs to give Lexington a 5-1 lead.

Jarman worked two innings allowing three earned runs on four hits. That line is a bit misleading though as Jarman allowed just one of his four hits to leave the infield. Josh Satow pitched two perfect innings to round out the Hot Rods pitching effort.

The series continues with afternoon baseball Wednesday at Applebee’s Park in Lexington, KY. LHP Matt Moore (3-3, 3.68) draws the start against Lexington RHP Ross Seaton (6-6, 2.69). First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 AM CDT. You can follow the action with Tom Gauthier on the radio beginning at 10:50 AM CDT at 1340 AM WBGN and www.bghotrods.com.
