[Via email from the Bowling Green Hot Rods' broadcaster Tom Gauthier.]Right-hander Shane Dyer rebounded from two shaky outings to throw six solid inning on Thursday in Lexington. Unfortunately Dyer gave up three runs on a night when Lexington’s Brad Dydalewicz (4-1) was on his game, resulting in a 6-2 Lexington victory. The loss leaves the Hot Rods with a 1-5 road trip and a 16-19 road record in the first half of the season heading into the All-Star Break on Monday.
Dyer cruised through the first four innings against the Legends, striking out five batters and allowing just one base runner on a two-out walk in the second. After the walk he set down eight in a row before the Legends strung together their first hits in the bottom of the fifth.
With one out, Federico Hernandez lined a double into the right field corner for the first hit by the Legends. Steve Brown followed with a double to left-center field to give Lexington a 1-0 lead. Brown then scored himself when Kyle Miller belted the third straight double of the inning to right field to bump the lead to 2-0.
Lexington scored again in the sixth after Dyer allowed a lead-off walk followed by a single from Brian Pellegrini. With runners at first and second and no one out Ebert Rosario hit what should have been a double play ball but Isaias Velasquez couldn’t field it cleanly, only retiring Rosario while leaving runners at second and third. The inability to get the doubleplay hurt immediately as Hernandez hit a slow-roller to short stop, scoring Cartwright from third for a 3-0 lead.
Dyer’s final line read six innings pitched, three runs on four hits, five strikeouts , and three walks. He took the loss falling to 1-5, 1-1 against the Legends.
Bowling Green made a game of it in the seventh inning but, again, left the inning wondering ‘what if?’. Mike McCormick and Jason Tweedy led off with consecutive singles to begin the seventh, knocking Dydalewicz from the game. Ashton Mowdy came on and immediately walked Jeremy Beckham to load the bases. Justin Reynolds then delivered a sacrifice fly to plate McCormick, moving Tweedy to third. Two batters later Tweedy scored on a strikeout-wild pitch, putting Anthony Scelfo at first base and cutting the deficit to 3-2.
That would be as close as the Hot Rods would come, however, as Lexington’s Henry Villar came on in relief of Mowdy with the bases loaded in the seventh. He retired Jake Jefferies on a ground out to first base to end that inning. Villar and Patrick Urckfitz combined to retire six of the final seven Hot Rods batters in the last two innings to seal the 6-2 win.
The Hot Rods return home for their final three-game home stand before the All-Star Break on Friday, June 19, against the Asheville Tourists. LHP Frank De Los Santos (3-5, 4.34) gets the ball for Bowling Green against Asheville RHP Parker Frazier (2-2, 5.69). First pitch is 7:05 PM CDT.
