The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs and Brevard County Manatees went extra innings in game two of the doubleheader as the Stone Crabs fell 1-0. The spotlight was on pitching as both teams pitched a shut-out through the 7 regulation innings and into extra frames.
The Manatees broke the tie and picked up the victory in the bottom of the ninth inning. Zelous Wheeler drew a walk to get a runner aboard for the Manatees. Sergio Miranda followed with a single to center that allowed Wheeler to score the winning run thanks in part to a throwing error by Emeel Salem.
David Newmann had a great outing by pitching 6 shut-out innings only allowing 2 hits while striking out 8 and walking 2. Tommy Rafferty pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief allowing 1 unearned run on 2 hits while striking out and walking 3 and picking up the loss. Robert Wooten was the winning pitcher for the Manatees.
What Went Right: David Newmann; 8 strikeouts and allowed 2 hits in 6 shut-out innings.
What Went Wrong: Emeel Salem; committed the error that allowed the game winning run to score, also went 0-4 with 3 strikeouts at the plate.
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs head home to Charlotte Sports Park to begin an eight game homestand. They begin a four game series against the Dunedin Blue Jays (24-31) on Thursday night. Darin Downs (5-2) is scheduled to start for Charlotte. Pat Burrell is also scheduled to make an MLB rehab appearance.
