The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs could not find away to stop the top scoring team in the league as they fell to the Dunedin Blue Jays 9-6 on Sunday at Charlotte Sports Park. The loss was the third in a row for the Stone Crabs. Dunedin struck first in the first innings as Scott Campbell hit an RBI double to left field that scored Darin Mastroianni and put the Blue Jays ahead 1-0.
But the Stone Crabs battled back in the second. Cody Cipriano led off the inning with a ground rule double to center and then scored on an RBI single by Shawn Williams. Ryan Royster drove Williams home to give the Stone Crabs a 2-1 lead.
Dunedin came back to tied the ball game in the third when Scott Campbell singled to right to score Justin Jackson. But the tie was broken in the bottom half of the inning as Henry Wrigley singled to center to score Emeel Salem. Cody Cipriano followed with a sac fly to score Jason Bartlett and put the Stone Crabs back on top 4-2.
The Blue Jays mounted a comeback starting with a double by Matt Liuzza in the fourth who later scored off a fielding error by Henry Wrigley. Then in the fifth it was a two run homer by Kevin Ahrens that gave the Blue Jays a 5-4 lead.
Dunedin scored again in the top of the seventh as Scott Campbell drove home Darin Mastroianni. The Stone Crabs added a run in the bottom of the seventh as Jason Bartlett led off the inning with a single then advance to second on a wild pitch and then later scored on another wild pitch. The Stone Crabs had the opportunity to tie things up in the inning but a bad call by the home plate umpire kept the run off the board and the Blue Jays held onto the lead 6-5.
Dunedin picked up some insurance runs in the eighth courtesy of three doubles in the inning. Matt Liuzza, Adam Loewen and Scott Campbell picked up RBI’s in the inning and increased the Blue Jays lead to 9-5. The Stone Crabs added a run in the ninth of an RBI single by Cody Cipriano that scored Shawn O’Malley, but the Blue Jays held on for the win 9-6.
Jesse Darcy pitched 6 innings and was charged with the loss allowing 5 runs (4 earned) off 8 hits while striking out 1. Brian Flores pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed 4 runs on 4 hits with a walk. Austin Hinkle pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed no runs on 2 hits while walking and striking out 1. Vince Bongiovanni was the winner for Dunedin.
What Went Right: Cody Cipriano; 3-4 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI’s and run scored. Jason Bartlett; finished his MLB rehab assignment by going 2-4 with a triple and 2 runs scored while walking once.
What Went Wrong: Missed Opportunities; Stone Crabs stranded 9 runners on base and were 5 for 17 with runners in scoring position.
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs homestand continues as they open up a four game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers (26-30) at Charlotte Sports Park. David Newmann (3-3) is set to pitch for the Stone Crabs.
