The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs continue to struggle against Dunedin as they have lost their fifth straight game against the Blue Jays, dropping game one of the doubleheader 3-1 at Dunedin Stadium. The Stone Crabs put the first run on the board in the top of the third inning as Shawn O’Malley drove home John Matulia to put Charlotte ahead 1-0.
Dunedin came back to tie the game in the bottom of the inning. Adam Loewen got things started with a double to center and then came home on a sacrifice fly by John Tolisano to tie the game at 1.
The contest stayed tied until the bottom of the sixth when Dunedin broke the tie. Eric Thames started the rally with a single to right . Kevin Ahrens followed with a walk to give the Blue Jays runners on first and second. Jonathan Jaspe delivered a two run double with two outs to score Thames and Ahrens. Zach Dials entered the game for Dunedin in the top of the seventh and kept the Stone Crabs off the board giving the Blue Jays a 3-1 victory.
David Newmann returned from the DL with a solid performance, pitching 5 innings and allowing 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 6 and walking 3. Justin Garcia was charged with the loss, this first of the season. Garcia allowed 2 runs on 2 hits while walking 2 in an inning of work. Tim Collins was the winner for Dunedin.
What Went Right: David Newmann; 6 strikeouts and 1 earned run in 5 innings pitched.
What Went Wrong: The offense; pretty quiet all game, only produced 5 hits and none of them were for extra bases, 0-6 with runners in scoring position.
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs and Blue Jays face off in game two of the doubleheader at Dunedin Stadium. Brian Flores (0-2) and Ryan Page (3-7) will be the pitchers.
