David Newhan’s eighth-inning grand slam turned a nail biter into a rout as the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs pounded the Durham Bulls, 16-8 on Tuesday night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The two teams combined for 24 runs on 28 hits and 11 walks in the three hour and eleven minute slugfest.
Lehigh Valley jumped on Bulls starter James Houser (3-3) for four in the second inning, but the Bulls responded with three in the bottom half highlighted by Ray Sadler’s two-run homer and Rhyne Hughes’ solo shot, his first as a Bull. The Iron Pigs answered with another four-spot in the third making it an 8-3 game.
Trailing 9-3 in the sixth, the Bulls mounted a comeback plating four runs capped off with Justin Ruggiano’s two-run double to make it a 9-7 game, but the Iron Pigs responded with five in the top of the eighth inning to put the game out of reach.
RHP Drew Carpenter (6-0) picked up the victory pitching five and two-thirds innings allowing seven runs (three earned) on 10 hits and three walks while striking out six. Houser took the loss allowing eight runs on eight hits, including three home runs, in four innings of work. The Durham bullpen, overworked and understaffed over the last several days, used catcher Alex Jamieson to pitch the ninth inning. Jameison allowed two runs on three hits and a walk.
The Bulls and Iron Pigs play a matinee at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park on Wednesday at 1:05 PM. Tickets are available at www.durhambulls.com or by phone at (919) 956-BULL.
