The Tampa Bay Rays have assigned the following players to the Gulf Coast League Rays from the Dominican Summer League Rays: LHP Enny Romero, RHP Jose Monegro, RHP Aneuris Mercedes, RHP Victor Mateo, RHP Eliazer Suero, C Gerardo Olivares, 1B Hector Gomez, and RF Ruben Contreras.All eight played for the DSL Rays in 2008. Of the group, 19 year-old RHSP Jose Monegro is the one to watch. In 12 starts last season he was 2-4 with a 2.94 ERA. His strikeout rate wasn't great, 24 K's in 49.0 IP, but he only allowed 8 walks and one home run. He was signed as a free agent on August 28, 2006, by Rays scout Junior Ramirez.
The DSL Rays signed the following free agents: OF Waldo Rosario, OF Luis Marte, SS Ariel Soriano, C Juan Martin, RHP Yamal Thomas, LHP Juan Pie, RHP Noel De Leon, RHP Carlos Cedeno.
The DSL Rays also placed CF Cesar Guillen on the restricted list, released RHP Alexis Hernandez, and RHP Wilmer Almonte filed for free agency.
