Rays 1st Round Pick - 30th Overall: 2B LeVon Washington

LeVon WashingtonBit of a surprise, but he's got the tools...

BaseballAmerica:
Washington attends the same high school that Marlins lefthander Andrew Miller did, but he's about as different a player as he can be. Washington's arm strength might be at the other end of the scale from Miller's, as he's recovering from labrum surgery, and some scouts say his arm is below the 20 at the bottom of the 20-80 scouting scale. His arm and offensive package have drawn comparisons to Johnny Damon, another central Florida prep product. Like Damon, Washington can hit, and he was moving up draft boards thanks to his blazing speed and consistent spring. A 6.2-second runner over 60 yards at showcases, Washington has played mostly infield but doesn't have the arm for it, and most scouts see him as an outfielder thanks to his easy speed. Washington has bat speed at the plate, giving him solid pop, though not true power, and he has shown signs of developing a good pro approach. Washington, who spent three years in Guam when his father was assigned there while in the military, could move as high as the supplemental first round despite his ar
Perfect Game:
LeVon Washington is a 2009 OF/MIF with a 5'10'', 170 lb. frame from Gainesville, FL who attends Gainesville HS. Washington has some outstanding tools that are tough to match. He has blazing speed, running a 6.21 sixty and his speed plays in games. LeVon has big arm strength from both the infield and outfield as he reaches the low 90's from both spots. He has very good range in the outfield and also shows good feet in the infield. At the plate he has a quick bat with hand strength in swing. He has a line drive swing plane and sprays line drives all over the field. He has verbally committed to the Florida Gators, but could create some strong draft interest. Aflac All American

He was drafted as a 2B but has also played the OF.

More coming...

  1. Am I reading this correctly? One site has him as having the arm of a 5 year old and the other says he can touch 90?

  2. I guess he had a good arm before the labrum surgery.

  3. So a reasonable chance the arm will come back. Thus, the Damon comparison would be silly.

  4. Any news on how soon we can expect him to sign? And if he signs in time to play what level would he start at?

  6. I'm not sure when he will sign, he could be a deadline type of guy. If he signs, he'd probably start in the GCL.

  7. Washington will sign. It's taken so long thus far because Boras is playing hard-ball. More then likely he is trying to gain more leverage by claiming his client will go back the U of Florida instead of signing. Frankly the Rays are in a win-win. If they do sign him, great. If they don't it's okay they will get a compensatory pick next year. Washington could chose to go to Florida but if he plays bad in Florida obviously his stock could drop considerably.
