Looks like he's a college senior, so we could see a below-slot deal. Hit .525/.652/1.010 in 2009. Like other draftees, had an injury: "Nommensen had started each of the first 28 games when he suffered a wrist injury on April 10 that sidelined him for a month…"
Snipped and a quote from his coach, via BaseballAmerica:
Brett Nommensen's on-base percentage, which ranks first in the nation. Good luck finding a better leadoff hitter anywhere than Eastern Illinois' senior center fielder, who has reached base safely in each of his last nine plate appearances and is hitting .518/.643/1.024 with 10 home runs, 21 RBIs and five stolen bases in 24 games.
"One of the neatest things about Brett is his ability to know how opposing pitchers want to get him out," Panthers coach Jim Schmitz said. "Obviously he's a gifted athlete with the plus speed, so he can use that to beat out some singles or get some doubles. And when you don't swing at bad pitches, that's a key thing."
Nommy is the man - Eastern Illinois was ranked as high as #24 in the country this spring. Nommy was responsible for much of the success.

Hutchman also thinks Nom's is a sleeper and will be a standout for the Rays in years to come.
ReplyDeleteNommensen was probably one of the best underrated hitters in the draft. Expect to see more from him as time moves forward
ReplyDeleteHutchman and Dets think alike. Nommy needs to be moved up to the Rays immediately. As of mid-June '10, he's batting 333 in his last 10 games. -Dets
