The Game: The Stone Crabs suffered a 8-1 loss to the Jupiter Hammerheads in game one of Friday’s doubleheader at Roger Dean Stadium. Jupiter jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Brandon Tripp doubled to left to score Greg Burns. Matt Dominguez followed with a sac fly to score Ben Harrison. The Hammerheads took a 2-0 lead and never looked back.
The Hammerheads added two more runs in the third inning as Greg Burns led off the inning with a single to right field. Ben Harrison cleared the bases with a two run homer to give Jupiter a 4-0 lead.
The Stone Crabs scored their only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Emeel Salem led off the inning with a single to center and then advanced to second on a steal. Greg Sexton singled to left to advance to third base. Cody Cipriano then followed with an RBI double to score Salem. The Stone Crabs trailed 4-1.
Jupiter put four more runs on the scoreboard in the fifth inning. Ryan Curry doubled to left and later scored on an RBI single by Ben Harrison. Brandon Tripp then drew a walk to put runners at first and second for the Hammerheads. But they did not stay there long as Matt Dominguez followed with a three run homer to give the Hammerheads their 8-1 margin of victory.
David Newmann suffered the loss by allowing 8 runs off 6 hits and walking 3 with 1 strikeout in 4 2/3 innings. Kevin Boggan finished the final 1 1/3 innings and did not allow a hit. Jeff Allison was the winning pitcher for Jupiter.
What Went Right: Emeel Salem; 2 for 3 and scored the only run for the Stone Crabs.
What Went Wrong: David Newmann; surrendered 8 runs off 6 hits and walked 3.
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs and Hammerheads complete the doubleheader with game two at Roger Dean Stadium. Jeremy Hall (9-4) will face Alejandro Sanabia (8-3).
