The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs fell to the Lakeland Flying Tigers by the score of 12-3 on Tuesday night at Joker Marchant Stadium. Lakeland got things going right from the start. Jordan Newton singled to right and then advanced to second on a wild pitch from David Newmann. Michael Bertram followed with a ground rule double to left giving Lakeland a 1-0 lead.
The Stone Crabs battled back to take the lead in the top of the second inning. Ryan Royster singled to right. Shawn Williams then laid down a sac bunt and both Royster and Williams advanced due to a throwing error by Lakeland’s third baseman Joseph Tucker. Mike McCormick drove home two runs with a ground rule double to center to give the Stone Crabs a 2-1 lead.
Lakeland produced a big inning in the third, striking for six runs and picking up the lead to stay. Joseph Tucker got it started by drawing a walk. Jordan Newton, Michael Bertram and Devin Thomas followed with consecutive singled to drive in two runs. Jeramy Laster then reached on a throwing error, allowing Bertram to score. Audy Ciriaco followed with a two run triple to give Lakeland the lead 7-2.
The Flying Tigers posted three more runs in the fifth inning. Devin Thomas and Jeramy Laster produced singles to give Lakeland runners on first and second. Audy Ciriaco followed with a single to center that scored Thomas. Then it was Chris White with a single to score Laster. Ciriaco scored on a force out by Justin Henry as the Flying Tigers increased their lead to 10-2.
Lakeland continued to produce runs, adding another to their total in the sixth. Jordan Newton led off the inning with a double to left. Michael Bertram followed with an RBI single to right that scored Newton and gave the Flying Tigers an 11-2 lead.
Both clubs exchanged runs in the eighth inning. First it was the Stone Crabs in the top of the inning as Ryan Royster hit a sac fly to score Shawn O’Malley. Then in the bottom of the inning Lakeland’s Devin Thomas hit an RBI double to score Michael; Bertram giving Lakeland the 12-3 margin of victory.
David Newmann recorded the loss, giving up 10 runs (8 earned) on 12 hits while striking out 4 and walking 1 in 4 1/3 innings. Jose Mejias pitched 2 2/3 innings and allowed 1 run on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts and a walk. Kevin Boggan pitched the final inning and surrendered 1 run on 2 hits with a strikeout. Mauricio Robles was the winning pitcher for Lakeland.
What Went Right: Mike McCormick; drove in two of the three Stone Crabs runs with a double.
What Went Wrong: David Newman; tagged for 10 runs (8 earned) in 4 1/3 innings.
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs return home to Charlotte Sports Park to kick off an eight game homestand beginning with a four game series against the Clearwater Threshers (12-11) on Wednesday night. Jeremy Hall (11-4) will be on the mound for the Stone Crabs.
