The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs were shut-out by the Sarasota Reds 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Ed Smith Stadium. The Reds broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the third inning when Jason Louwsma delivered a solo homer run to left center field. Sarasota added another run in the fifth inning when Louwsma scored on an RBI double by Dave Sappelt giving the Reds a 2-0 lead.
The Reds put three more runs on the board in sixth. Denis Phipps got things going with a double to left followed by a single by Jake Kahaulelio. Phipps scored on a sac fly by Jose Gualdron. Jason Louwsma followed with an RBI double to score Kahaulelio and later scored on a single by Shane Carlson. Sarasota now held a 5-0 lead in which they held to the end.
Jesse Darcy was the losing pitcher, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits in 5 2/3 innings while striking out 1 and walking 2. Jose Mejias pitched the final 2 1/3 innings giving up no runs on 1 hit. Scott Carroll was the winning pitcher for Sarasota.
What Went Right: Emeel Salem; only Stone Crabs to get multiple hits by going 2 for 4.
What Went Wrong: Offense; 5 Stone Crabs failed to get a hit, 0-6 with runners in scoring position while stranding 7 runners.
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs look to avoid the sweep by Sarasota on Monday night at Ed Smith Stadium. Darin Downs (8-4) will be on the mound for Charlotte against Jeremy Horst (5-8) for Sarasota.
