Durham scored early and often with runs in the first four innings as they beat the Norfolk Tides, 5-3 in Game One of Saturday’s Day-Night Double Header.
Durham got on the board in the first with a sacrifice fly by Matt Joyce scoring Ray Olmedo to make it 1-0. They got another in the second inning on Jon Weber’s 9th home run of the season, a solo shot to right field. In the third inning, Joyce scored on Justin Ruggiano’s double to left field to make it 3-0, then Elliot Johnson’s RBI-single scoring Ray Sadler in the fourth made it 4-0 Bulls.
Norfolk got a run in the top of the fifth inning on Justin Turner’s double to right field scoring Carlos Rojas, and another in the seventh inning on Michael Aubrey’s double scoring Turner to make it 4-2.
The Bulls answered in the bottom of the seventh inning on Weber’s RBI-double scoring Ruggiano. Norfolk logged a final tally in the eighth inning but wouldn’t get any closer.
LHP Carlos Hernandez (6-6) picked up the victory pitching five innings allowing one run on six hits while striking out three. RHP Jason Childers picked up his second save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.
