The Tampa Bay Rays have made the following roster moves affecting the roster of Double-A Montgomery prior to Friday’s game against West Tenn:
RHP Chris Mason has been released by the Tampa Bay Rays, RHP Matthew Gorgen has been promoted to Montgomery from Charlotte (A+) [24 + 2].
Mason, the 2007 Double-A Pitcher of the Year, has been released less than two seasons later after struggling to a record of 6-10 and an ERA of 6.21 with Durham (AAA) in 2008. The former second-round draft selection was 3-5 with an ERA of 6.24 this season for the Biscuits.
Gorgen, in just his second professional season, had been dominant for Charlotte prior to his promotion. He ascends to the Double-A level for the first time in his career after going 4-0 with an ERA of just 0.59 in 27 appearances out of the Stone Crabs bullpen. He led Charlotte with 14 saves.
The corresponding moves leave the Biscuits at the Southern League roster maximum of 24 active players. Two players (Jason Perry, Brandon Chaves) are currently on the Disabled List.
Gorgen will be assigned a uniform number upon his arrival in Montgomery.
