Chris Nowak drove in five runs and Aneury Rodriguez took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning as the Biscuits rolled over the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, 11-3, on Friday night in front of 5,987 at Riverwalk Stadium.
The Biscuits grabbed the lead quickly against Jaxx starter Dan Cortes in the first inning. Cortes walked Desmond Jennings and Rashad Eldridge to start the ballgame. Jennings had already stolen second base and the pair then pulled off a successful double-steal of second and third base. Nowak then delivered a two-run single to put the Biscuits ahead, 2-0.
The Diamond Jaxx tied the game quickly with two runs in the top of the second off of Rodriguez. The runs were both unearned and scored without the benefit of a hit as the inning started with an error on Matt Fields, which allowed Mike Wilson to reach safely. Rodriguez walked Johan Limonta and after recording the first out he hit Matt Mangini to load the bases. He then hit Guillermo Quiroz to force in a run. Jimmy Mojica delivered a sacrifice fly to tie the ballgame, 2-2.
Montgomery reclaimed the lead with a two-out uprising against Cortes in the third. Fernando Cortez started the rally by extending his league-best hitting-streak to 19 games with a two-out single. Matt Fields roped a double down the left-field line and Cortez scored from first to give the Biscuits the lead back. Cody Cipriano then lifted a two-run opposite-field home run to right field to extend the Biscuits lead to 5-2. It was the first home run at the Double-A level for Cipriano.
Cortes lasted into the fifth inning, lifted after 4 1/3 innings. He took the loss after allowing five runs -- all earned -- on four hits. He walked four and struck out five.
Meanwhile, Rodriguez (5-10) continued to hold the Jaxx without a hit despite their two unearned runs in the second inning. His no-hit bid continued into the sixth inning when David Espinosa finally recorded the first hit for the Jaxx with a seeing-eye single back up the middle. Rodriguez departed after the single, his night ending after 5 2/3 innings. He earned his fifth win of the season, allowing just the two unearned runs. He walked three, hit three more, but conceded just the one hit and struck out six.
Fields contributed a second two-run double and Joe Gaetti added an RBI single as the Biscuits capped their scoring with three two-out runs in the seventh inning.
Eddie Morlan conceded the third run of the ballgame for West Tenn on an Espinosa RBI single during his two innings of relief in the eighth inning.
Batting with the bases loaded in the eighth inning, Nowak made it 11-3 with a bases-clearing double. Nowak set a Biscuits' single-season high with five RBIs on the night.
Paul Phillips finished the ballgame for the Biscuits with a scoreless ninth. The Biscuits have claimed two of the three games in the series.
Game four of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Saturday night at Riverwalk Stadium. RHP Jeremy Hellickson (2-1, 2.49) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Steve Bray (2-4, 3.08) for West Tenn.
