The Birmingham Barons claimed a pitchers' duel in walk-off fashion, 1-0, over the Biscuits on Thursday night at Regions Park.
The Barons walked off winners with a rally against reliever Matt Gorgen in the bottom of the ninth inning. Gorgen, who had escaped a jam in the eighth, allowed a single to David Cook with one out. Dayan Viciedo followed with a single to left-center field and Cook aggressively took third on the play. Stefan Gartrell then supplied the game-winner, singling through the hole on the right-side of the infield to score Cook. Gorgen (0-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season.
The loss overshadowed an outstanding performance from Biscuits' starter Aneury Rodriguez. Rodriguez took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning, before C.J. Retherford broke it up with a leadoff double. Rodriguez recovered to work scoreless through the seventh inning, having allowed just the one hit and walking one. He struck out six, but didn't factor in the decision.
Barons' starter John Ely matched Rodriguez stride-for-stride through seven innings, blanking the Biscuits on just three hits. Ely didn't surrender his first hit until the fourth inning, walking two and striking out five. He did not factor in the decision.
Henry Mabee (1-1) followed Ely and worked two scoreless innings of relief, allowing a lone hit in the ninth. He earned his first win of the season as the Barons walked off winners to take the series.
Game four of the series is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Friday night at Regions Park. RHP Rayner Oliveros (3-0, 4.28) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Daniel Hudson (4-0, 2.48) for Birmingham.
