Three Birmingham hurlers combined on a five-hit shutout as the Barons defeated the Biscuits, 3-0, at Riverwalk Stadium on Monday night.
The Barons struck first against Biscuits' starter Aneury Rodriguez in the first. The second batter of the game, John Shelby, cracked a high-flying solo-home run to left field to put Birmingham in front, 1-0.
Birmingham added an unearned run against Rodriguez on two Biscuits' errors in the fifth. Tyler Flowers reached on the first error on Matt Fields and scored two batters later when Joe Gaetti misplayed a liner to right field from Dayan Viciedo and the Barons led, 2-0.
Meanwhile, Barons' starter Daniel Hudson (2-0) was rolling, ultimately shutting out the Biscuits for five innings on just three hits. He struck out seven, while walking one to win in his first start against Montgomery.
Rodriguez (4-9) departed after six innings and took the loss for the Biscuits. He allowed just two runs, one earned on five hits. He walked two and struck out four, taking the hard-luck loss.
The Barons capped the scoring with a run off Neal Frontz in the seventh inning. Jordan Danks led off the inning with a double and two batters later was brought in when David Cook singled.
Ricky Brooks worked three scoreless innings of relief behind Hudson, and Henry Mabee finished the shutout with a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.
The Barons have now won all three series played between the two clubs this season, and hold a 10-3 advantage in the season-series.
The series finale is scheduled for 7:05 PM on Tuesday night at Riverwalk Stadium. RHP Brian Baker (4-1, 3.47) will make the start for Montgomery against RHP Kyle McCulloch (6-8, 4.59) for Birmingham.
