The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs dropped the finale against the St. Lucie Mets by the score of 12-2 on Wednesday night at Tradition Field. The Stone Crabs scored their only two runs early in the first inning. John Matulia led off with a single to center. Nevin Ashley followed with a ground rule double. Henry Wrigley drove them home with a two run double to put the Stone Crabs ahead 2-0.
But it was all St. Lucie from that point on. The Mets got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Francisco Pena singled to lead off the inning. Carlos Guzman and Stefan Welch followed with back to back walks to load the bases. But the bases did not stay loaded long as Brahiam Maldonado cleared them with a grand slam to put the Mets ahead 4-2.
St. Lucie added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kirk Nieuwenhuis doubled to right to get things going. Reese Havens followed with an RBI single to score Nieuwenhuis and increase the Mets lead to 5-2.
The Mets added seven more runs in the eighth inning courtesy of four home runs in the inning. Carlos Guzman, Brahiam Maldonado, Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Reese Havens all went deep for the Mets, giving them the 12-2 win.
Jake McGee pitched shut-out innings and allowed 2 hits while striking out 4 and walking 2. Angel Castro was charged with the loss, allowing 10 runs on 8 hits while striking out 5 and walking 4. Kevin Boggan pitched the final inning and allowed 2 runs on 3 hits.
What Went Right: Jake McGee; solid 3 inning performance, no runs on 2 hits with 4 K’s.
What Went Wrong: Angel Castro; rocked again, 10 runs on 8 hits with 3 home runs allowed.
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs kick off a four game series against the Fort Myers Miracle. The first game will be played Thursday night at Hammond Stadium and then conclude at Charlotte Sports Park. Alex Cobb will get the start for the Stone Crabs.
