The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs swept Monday’s doubleheader with a 5-2 win over the St. Lucie Mets in game two at Tradition Field. The Stone Crabs took an early lead in the first inning by scoring two runs. Emeel Salem singled to lead off the game. John Matulia followed with an RBI double to score Salem. Matulia advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a sac fly by Henry Wrigley to give the Stone Crabs a 2-0 lead.
The Stone Crabs added another run in the third. Drew Anderson led off the inning with a single to center. Anderson then advanced to second on a single by Henry Wrigley. Ryan Royster drew a walk to load the bases for the Stone Crabs. Shawn Williams drove home a run with a sac fly to score Anderson and increase the lead to 3-0.
The Mets made the scoreboard in the third inning. Luis Rivera doubles to left to start the inning. Hector Pellot gets hit by a pitch and then Kirk Nieuwenhuis walks to load the bases. Reese Havens drives in the first run with a ground out to the mound. Then Zach Lutz picked up the second one on an error by Shawn Williams to pull the Mets to bring 1 of the Stone Crabs.
The Stone Crabs then capitalized on errors by the Mets in the fifth to add more runs to their lead. Shawn Williams singled to get things started. Reid Fronk then reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Then the pick-off attempt by St. Lucie catcher Tony Maccani sailed into left field allowing Fronk and Williams to score and increase the Stone Crab lead to 5-2.
Austin Hinkle went 3 inning and surrendered 2 runs (1 earned) on a hit with 4 strikeouts and 2 walk. Justin Garcia followed with 2 1/3 shut-out innings allowing 2 hits with 4 strikeouts and a walk in recording the win. Kevin Boggan earned the save but pitching 1 2/3 shutout innings and allowing 1 hit and 2 strikeouts. Tim Stronach was the losing pitcher for the Mets.
What Went Right: Drew Anderson; 2 for 3 with a run scored.
What Went Wrong: Mike McCormick; 0 for 3.
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs and Mets face off again Tuesday at Tradition Field. Brian Flores (1-5) will be on the mound for Charlotte.
