The Game: The Hudson Valley Renegades put eight runs on the scoreboard but it wasn’t enough as they fell to the Auburn Doubledays 11-8 on Saturday night at Falcon Field. Auburn scored first in the bottom of the first. Chris Hopkins led off the inning with a double to right and then was drove home on a ground ball by Ryan Goins to take a 1-0 lead.
The Renegades came back to tie the game in the second inning. Mark Thomas led off the inning with a solo home run to right field to tie the game at one.
Hudson Valley took the lead in the next inning by putting three runs on the scoreboard. DJ Jones singled to left to get things going. Chris Murrill followed with an RBI double to score Jones. Murrill later scored on an RBI single by Dustin Biell who later scored on a Mark Thomas single to give the Renegades a 4-1 lead.
The Doubledays battled back in the fifth inning. Yan Gomes led off the inning with a walk then advanced to second on a single by Sean Ochinko. Lance Durham followed with a walk to load the bases. Markus Brisker later followed with an RBI single to score Gomes. Then Chris Hopkins drove home Ochinko to bring Auburn to within a run of the lead.
Hudson Valley added another run in the sixth inning as Mayobanex Acosta doubled to lead off the inning. Acosta later scored on an RBI single by Bennett Davis to increase the lead to two, 5-3.
But that’s when things when bad for the Renegades as Auburn posted five runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead. Ryan Goins singled to right, then advanced to second on steal. Welinton Ramirez followed with a walk. Then Yan Gomes belted an RBI singled to score Goins and advance Ramirez to second. Sean Ochinko then walked to load the bases for the Doubledays. Lance Durham drove home two runs with a double to center followed by an sac fly by Markus Brisker to score Ochinko. Durham later scored on an RBI single by Kevin Nolan to put the Doubledays out in front 8-5.
The Doubledays added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Welinton Ramirez singled to right to lead of the inning then advanced to second on a passed ball. Ramirez moved to third on a ground out by Yan Gomes and then scored on a fielder’s choice by Sean Ochinko. Lance Durham followed with a single to right. Then it was a two run double by Markus Brisker to put the Doubledays ahead 11-5.
The Renegades tried to mount a comeback in the last two innings of the game. David Genoa scored on an RBI double by DJ Jones in the eighth. Then in the ninth the Renegades got a two more runs as Mark Thomas drove home Diogenes Luis, then Mayobanex Acosta drove home a run with a double to score Dustin Biell for the second run of the inning. But it wasn’t enough as the Renegades fell to the Doubledays 11-8.
Jason McEachern went 5 innings and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 2 and walking 3. Jordi Amargos picked up the loss allowing 4 runs on 2 hits with 2 walks without recording an out. Bladimir Florentino was charges with a bad save allowing 1 run on 2 hits with 2 strikeouts and a walk in 1 inning. Glenn Gibson pitched the remaining 2 innings and allowed 3 runs on 3 hits with a strikeout. Willy Mendez was the winning pitcher for Auburn.
What Went Right: Mark Thomas; 3 for 5 with a double, home run, 2 RBIs and a run scored.
What Went Wrong: Jordi Amargos; allowed 4 runs on 2 hits with 2 walks and never recorded an out in the game.
A Look Ahead: The Renegades and Doubledays face off again on Sunday evening at Falcon Field.
