The Tampa Bay Rays have made the following moves affecting the roster of Double-A Montgomery prior to their series opener with Mobile on Thursday night:
LHP Darin Downs promoted to Montgomery from Charlotte (A+), LHP Ryan Morse reassigned to Charlotte (A+) [24 + 1].
Downs leads the Florida State League in ERA with a mark of 2.00 in 19 starts and 20 overall appearances at the time of his promotion. His 121 2/3 innings will keep him eligible until the end of the season, meaning he will most likely be awarded the FSL ERA title. His 12 wins (12-4) also place him second in the league behind only teammate Jeremy Hall (13). He will join the Biscuits’ starting rotation and start for the Biscuits in Monday’s series finale against the Mobile BayBears.
Downs will move into the rotation spot of RHP Heath Rollins, who will pitch in relief for the Biscuits out of the bullpen.
The corresponding moves keep the Biscuits at the Southern League maximum of 24 active players. One player (Jason Perry) is currently on the Disabled List.
Downs will be assigned a uniform number upon his arrival in Montgomery.
