The Biscuits cashed in three Mississippi errors to plate four unearned runs en route to a series-clinching, 6-3, win in the finale of a five-game series at Trustmark Park on Wednesday night.
The Braves used an early error to jump on top against Biscuits' starter Rayner Oliveros in the first inning. Concepcion Rodriguez bounced a ball to third base, which Fernando Cortez couldn't handle, allowing Rodriguez to reach. Brandon Hicks followed with a hit and Jason Heyward forced Hicks at second to put runners on the corners with one out. Freddie Freeman sent an RBI single to right field that scored Rodriguez, but Heyward was out at the plate trying to score from first. Willie Cabrera followed with a two-out triple to right-center field, plating Freeman for a 2-0 lead. Both runs charged to Rodriguez were unearned.
An error allowed the Biscuits to turn the tables on Mississippi in the third inning. J.T. Hall started the rally with a one-out single off of Braves' starter Ryne Reynoso. Jason Bowers followed with what appeared to be a double-play ball to Hicks at shortstop. However, Travis Jones dropped the attempted flip from Hicks and everybody reached safely. Rashad Eldridge then cracked an RBI single and advanced to second on an attempted throw to third base. Fernando Cortez then ripped a two-run single to give the Biscuits the lead, 3-2. All three runs charged to Reynoso were unearned.
Montgomery tacked on a run in the fourth, as Jose Lobaton led off the inning with a double. Cody Strait advanced him to third and J.T. Hall made it 4-2 Biscuits with a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Biscuits added two runs to their runs, both charged to Reynoso, due to two errors on Jones in the seventh inning. Strait led off the inning with a single and a batter later Bowers singled him to third. Reynoso departed in favor of Jerome Gamble who bounced Eldridge to second base. Jones misplayed the double-play ball, allowing Strait to score. Brandon Chaves followed with another double-play chance to second that Jones also misplayed, bringing in Bowers for a 6-2 lead.
Both runs were charged to Reynoso (6-7), who took the loss, allowing six runs over 6 1/3 innings, only two of which were earned. Oliveros (4-1) took the win for Montgomery, working six innings, and conceding only the two unearned runs in the first inning.
Eddie Morlan turned in two scoreless innings of relief in the seventh and eighth innings, and Neal Frontz closed out the series win, allowing the final run to Mississippi in the ninth.
The Biscuits open a 10-game homestand with the series opener of a five-game series scheduled for 7:05 PM on Thursday night at Riverwalk Stadium. LHP Brandon Mann (5-7, 4.44) will make the start for the Biscuits against LHP Tom Layne (0-0, ---) for Mobile.
