The Game: The Princeton Rays shut out the Johnson City Cardinals 3-0 in game one of Saturday’s doubleheader at Howard Johnson Field. The Rays broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth inning. Tomas Francisco and Daniel Rhault drew back to back walk to get things started. Alejandro Torres followed with a single to center that loaded the bases. Brian Bryles drove in two runs with the assistance of a Johnson City error to give Princeton a 2-0 lead.
The Rays added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Alejandro Torres singled to left and later advanced to third on a double by Ty Morrison. Torres then scored on a wild pitch to give Princeton the 3-0 win.
Julius Dettrich picked up the win, pitching 5 shut-out innings allowing 2 hits, 4 strikeouts and a walk. Kirby Yates earned the save with a similar line score of no run, 2 hits, 4 strikeouts and walk but all this in only 2 innings of service.
What Went Right: Pitching; Dettrich and Yates combined for complete game shut-out with 8 K’s.
What Went Wrong: Julio Cedeno; 0 for 4 with a strike-out.
A Look Ahead: The Rays and Cardinals will play game two of Saturday’s doubleheader at Howard Johnson Field.
