The Game: The Charlotte Stone Crabs defeated the Sarasota Reds 1-0 on Friday night at Charlotte Sports Park. David Newmann and Lance Janke faced off in a pitching duel with both pitchers not allowing a run until the sixth inning.
The Stone Crabs broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth inning. Nevin Ashley doubled to left field to lead off the inning. John Matulia singled to left to advance Ashley to third. Then Henry Wrigley reached on an error to load the bases for the Stone Crabs. Shawn Williams followed with a sac fly to score Ashley for the only run of the game. But that one run was all that was needed as the Charlotte pitching staff kept the shut-out going to the end and the Stone Crabs won the game 1-0.
David Newmann pitched his second consecutive shut-out against the Reds, pitching 7 innings and allowing only 3 hits wit 7 strikeouts and a walk in earning the win. Richard De Los Santos earned the save, throwing 2 no hit innings to complete the shut-out. Lance Janke was the losing pitcher for Sarasota.
What Went Right: David Newmann; with tonight’s shut-out performance, Newmann has thrown 14 consecutive shut-out innings.
What Went Wrong: Ryan Royster; 0 for 3 with 2 K’s and an error in the field.
A Look Ahead: The Stone Crabs and Reds face off again on Saturday night at Charlotte Sports Park. Brian Flores (1-6) will pitch against Curtis Partch (2-2).
