The Game: The Hudson Valley Renegades defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones 4-2 on Wednesday night at Key Span Park. The Cyclones took an early lead in the first inning. Jordany Valdespin and Matthew Gaski both singled to lead off the inning. Then Carlos Beltran delivered an RBI single to put Brooklyn ahead 1-0.
The Renegades battled back to take the lead in the second inning. Eli Sonoqui singled to center and then advanced ton a ground ball by Mayobanex Acosta. DJ Jones followed with a single to center to put runners on the corners. Elias Otero then drew a walk to lead the bases. Diogenes Luis delivered a two run double to give the Renegades a 2-1 lead.
Hudson Valley added another run in the third on an RBI triple by Mayobanex Acosta that scored Dustin Biell. Then again in the fifth when Eli Sonoqui singled to center to score Chris Murrill, increasing the lead to 4-1.
Brooklyn picked up another run in the seventh with a solo home run by Nicholas Santomauro. But it wasn’t enough as the Renegades held on for the 4-2 win.
Jason McEachern picked up the win, pitching 6 innings and allowing only 1 run on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts and a walk. Bladimir Florentino pitched 1 1/3 innings and allowed a run on 3 hits with 3 strikeouts. Zach Quate saved the game with 1 2/3 innings pitched and allowed 1 hit while striking out 3 and walking 1. Wesley Wrenn was the losing pitcher for Brooklyn.
What Went Right: Jason McEachern; 1 earned run in 6 innings with 5 K’s.
What Went Wrong: Stranding runners; Renegades left 7 men on base and went 4 for 12 with runners in scoring position.
A Look Ahead: The Renegades and Cyclones head to Dutchess Stadium for the second game of the series. Kevin Chavez (1-2) will pitch against Mark Cohoon (9-2).
