who are Sergovia and F Gonzalez? Are they prospects near the level of Guevara?
ReplyDeleteSegovia played for the VSL Rays in 2008 and then for the VSL Rays and stateside for the GCL Rays in 2009. For the '09 VSL Rays he played mostly catcher with some 1B and DH, he hit .349/.417/.545 in 189 AB's and was promoted to the GCL Rays. In the GCL he mostly caught and some DH, but only hit .188/.293/.261 in 69 AB's. I'd look for him to be catching for the GCL or Princeton next season. He'll turn 20 on April 27th.
ReplyDeleteGonzalez was Tampa Bay's primary SS in the Liga Paralela this season, over Guevara. In 2008 he played SS for the VSL Rays hitting .183/.230/.207 in 164 AB's. In 2009 he played 2B, SS, and 3B for the GCL Rays. He hit .226/.257/.304 in 168 AB's. He turns 20 April 4th.
I'd rank them Guevara (big gap) Segovia (pretty big gap) Gonzalez. Guevara should blow past them in the next couple of years. Segovia is interesting because of being a catcher. We'll have to see if the bat can make it in the states. Gonzalez did force Guevara to 2B in the Liga Paralela, but this is the first time he's shown any ability at the plate.
What is the scoop on Roan Salas? I know it was only the VESL, but he posted some good numbers this summer. Is he destined to be a first baseman who can't hit enough?
ReplyDeletethanks Doug
ReplyDeleteThe Rays signed Salas last May as a minor league free agent. He had previously been in the Rangers organization, playing for their Dominican Summer League teams in 2007 and 2008.
ReplyDeleteThe Rays assigned him to their Venezuelan Summer League team in 2009 and he hit very well, leading the entire Rays organization in OPS at 1.063 (among qualied batters). In 222 ABs he hit .338/.409/.653 with 37 XBHs (15 HRs) out of 75 total hits. He played 27 games at 3B, 21 at 1B, and 14 as DH.
He's only listed at 5'11" 175 lbs, so I don't know if he'll hit for enough power at 1B as he advances. If he can stay at 3B I think he'd have a better chance. The Rangers had him play alot at 2B in '07 and '08, so that may also be an option. He's never played in the OF, but maybe LF could be another option.
He doesn't turn 20 until June 9th, so he's got plenty of time. I'd like to see come stateside and play in the GCL next year, he's got nothing left to prove in the VSL.
