ZEBULON, NC – Ryan Reid failed to record an out in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Carolina Mudcats scored three runs and walked off with an 8-7 win Sunday at Five County Stadium.
Montgomery used a lack of control from Carolina starter Alexander Smit to get on the board in the first. Smit hit both Shawn O’Malley and Emeel Salem to start the frame, then Greg Sexton singled to score O’Malley and put the Biscuits up 1-0.
After Eric Eyemann scored for the Mudcats to make it 1-1 in the second, the Biscuits put up four in the third behind a bases-clearing single from Ian Paxton, making it 5-1.
Carolina cut it to two with a pair of runs driven in by Jose Castro in the fourth. After a sacrifice fly from Denis Phipps made it 5-4 in the fifth, Yonder Alonso hit a solo homer to tie things up at 5-5 in the seventh.
But Montgomery quickly retook the lead in the top of the eighth. Cody Strait doubled to lead off the frame and scored on a throwing error. Drew Anderson then singled to right to plate Ryan Royster, who had reached on the throwing error to make it 7-5 Biscuits.
The fateful bottom of the ninth began with a leadoff double from Sean Danielson. Ryan Reid then walked Kris Negron and gave up a single to Alonso to make it 7-6. After Reid hit Sean Henry to load the bases, the tying run scored on a wild pitch. Eyemann then poked a base hit past the drawn-in infield to right for the winning hit.
Royster was the only Biscuit in the starting lineup not to record a hit. Carolina knocked 15 hits against four Biscuits pitchers.
Reid (0-1) takes the loss, and Sean Watson (1-0) picks up the win with his 9th inning relief work.
Montgomery begins its series with Chattanooga on Monday night, as LHP Alex Torres (1-0, 1.00) faces off against RHP Chris Withrow (0-1, 7.27) at 6:15.
