(Fort Mill, SC) Dan Johnson gave Aneury Rodriguez all he would need in the fourth inning, belting a three-run homer to break a scoreless tie, as the Bulls won their fifth straight, an 11-0 shutout of Charlotte on Tuesday.
Johnson's three-run homer to left center off Jeff Marquez (1-2) followed a Fernando Perez single, and a one-out walk to Justin Ruggiano. It was Johnson's sixth of the year, a league-leading total.
Rodriguez dominated Charlotte in his Triple-A debut. In seven innings the right did not allow a runner past second base. He gave up just a walk and four hits, while striking out six. Dale Thayer pitched a perfect eighth and Richard De Los Santos the ninth as Durham collected its first shutout of the season.
Offensively, the top scoring team in the International League continued to put up incredible numbers. Every member of the lineup scored at least a run, and eight of nine Bulls had at least a hit. Johnson and Ryan Shealy each drove in four runs. Johnson, Shealy and Alvin Colina homered to key a 15-hit attack. The Bulls, a league-best 10-3, now have won five straight, and have outscored the opposition 53-10 over that stretch. The Bulls now lead the IL in runs scored, homers and stolen bases.
Durham comes home to start a six-game home stand on Wednesday against the same Charlotte Knights. Coverage on 620 the Buzz begins at 12:50, with first pitch at 1:05. Virgil Vasquez starts against Matt Zaleski in a battle of righties. Tickets are available at www.durhambulls.com.
