Durham, NC – Charlotte shortstop Brent Lillibridge threw wide to the inside of the first base bag allowing Hank Blalock to get to first safely as Fernando Perez scored the winning run in the Bulls 6-5 win over Charlotte in 12 innings on Wednesday afternoon.
Perez had laced a single to right field off Charlotte reliever Freddy Dolsi with one out, then advanced to second on a passed ball. Justin Ruggiano flew out to right field advancing Perez to third. Blalock then hit a ball that Lillibridge backhanded and threw off-balance causing the first baseman to come off the bag as Blalock crossed.
Durham scored three runs in the first inning on Blalock’s first home run of the season and a pair in the third on Dan Johnson’s opposite field blast. Charlotte got a run in the third inning, then plated four in the fifth off of Bulls starter Virgil Vasquez to tie the game.
RHP Brian Baker picked up the victory pitching one and one-third innings of relief allowing a walk and no hits. Dolsi took the loss allowing a run (unearned) on one hit in an inning and two-thirds.
Prior to the beginning of the bottom of the eighth inning the skies opened up forcing a delay of one hour and 32 minutes. Total time of game including delay was five hours and eight minutes.
The Bulls and Knights conclude their series on Thursday night at 7:05 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Tickets are available at www.durhambulls.com or by phone at (919) 956-BULL.
