The Game: The Montgomery Biscuits defeated the Mississippi Braves 2-1 on Monday night. The Biscuits earned the win thanks in part to a dazzling 2 hit performance by starting pitcher Darin Downs.
The Biscuits took the lead in the home half of the first inning. Emeel Salem led off the inning with a line drive double to right. Salem would later score on a ground ball by Matt Fields to take a 1-0 lead.
The Biscuits added to their lead in the fourth inning. Greg Sexton singled to left to get things started. Cody Cipriano followed with a single to move Sexton to second. John Matulia then drove home Sexton with an RBI single to left, increasing the lead to 2-0.
Mississippi posted their only run in the ninth inning. Mauro Gomez drew a walk to put a runner on base with two outs. Cody Johnson then singled to center, moving Gomez to third. Orlando Mercado singled home the run with a line drive to center. But Paul Phillips rallied to get the third out to secure the 2-1 Biscuits win.
Darin Downs improved to 2-0 with a 5 2/3 shut-out appearance recording 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. Dane De La Rosa followed 1 1/3 no hit innings of relief with a strikeout. Paul Phillips pitched the final 2 frames allowing 1 run on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts and a walk, recording his second save of the season.
