Yeah, was in a hurry and no time to add comments, but Vasquez did seem odd. The stories at the time were sounding rather innocent, riding along on his scooter, hit by car, 2 broken wrists, with the throwing hand less severe. Now released. Hmmm. Chris, put on your reporter hat and find out what happened. And please feel free to link to your WDBB posts here, guys like you, FreeZo, Cork, are friends and should always feel free to post links in the comments. Just checked the BA article again, still the same. I'll keep checking to see if it's revised. He's still on the Bulls roster on milb.com, but that means next to nothing. It would be unusual for Eddy to be wrong, and it's not like he just mixed up another player's name, he even notes the scooter incident, so he meant Vasquez.
In the comments to the article, Matt Eddy added this:
"Apparently a team *can* reinstate and release a minor league player on the DL. The Rays did so with Virgil Vasquez. It's right there in black and white.
This is a special case, though, seeing as Vasquez's injury was not sustained in a game or other team-related activity."
If you mean the Lake County Captains of the Midwest League, Eastern Division, cool. I can see him. Assuming that, great news for the Patton family, welcome to the Indians org.
I mentioned to someone, in Oho, that Jason Patton had been released and he told me he had just read about him signing with that other team in the Canton, Ohio newpapaper. Now, I'm confused.
Guess that shows you how little I understand about baseball. How can the Rays release a kid with two broken wrists? (Vasquez)

ReplyDeleteNot likely to get an answer, but I'll give it a shot.
ReplyDeleteRe links: Likewise feel free to link to me if you'd like.
Maybe his contract stipulated that he wasn't allowed to ride on scooters???

So I guess that settles it.
Apparently Vasquez released and re-signed. Vasquez is now officially in extended spring training. Will try to add some when I get to my game post.
ReplyDeleteWow, the release of Patton seems a little strange, the kid hit .278 in rookie ball with 3 HR and 4 3B in 169 at bat.
ReplyDeleteLooks like decent numbers. A lot of people with less attractive numbers still on board and some of them promoted to Bowling Green.
Not sure how you release a player after 169 AB with those numbers.
Just informed that Jason Patton just signed with the Lake Erie Captains in the Eastern League.

ReplyDeleteNo Lake Erie is an indy ball team
ReplyDeleteSorry. Do you mean the Lake Erie Crushers of the indy Frontier League? If so, still in Avon... out west of me.

ReplyDeletehello. not know much about baseball but that means luis marchena no longer play with rays
ReplyDeleteThat is correct.
