HOOVER, AL – John Matulia and Cody Strait knocked back-to-back two-out doubles in the eighth inning, and the Biscuits (20-18) snapped a season-long four-game skid with a 3-2 win over the Birmingham Barons (11-27) Tuesday at Regions Park.
The Barons scored in the first inning against Alex Torres. Buck Coats singled to start things, then Dale Molenhauer followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Brent Morel promptly brought them home with a single, making it 2-0 Barons.
The Biscuits got one back in the second inning. Matt Fields led off with a walk, then after moving to second when a potential double-play-starting throw when off his back, scored on a Drew Anderson single.
Nevin Ashley walked to start the third, and Matt Sweeney, making his Biscuits debut, doubled down the right field line to score Ashley and tie things at 2-2.
Andrew Dobies (1-2) retired the first two Biscuits in the eighth inning, then Matulia hit a bloop-shot to right-center. CF John Shelby dove forward but couldn’t get it, and SS Justin Fuller had it carom towards right. Matulia saw the ball squirt away, and hustled into second with a double. Strait’s go-ahead double was pulled just fair inside the bag at third.
Buck Coats reached to lead off the ninth against Paul Phillips (5), but he was able to retire the next three in order to get the save.
Torres struck out eight while walking three in a five-inning no-decision. Dane De La Rosa (4-0) pitched two scoreless frames to get the win, while Dobies was tagged with the loss.
LHP David Newmann looks to help the Biscuits salvage two-of-five at 11:05 Wednesday morning against Birmingham’s Southern League ERA-leader, RHP Charlie Shirek.
