JACKSON, TN – Matt Sweeney went 3-5 and drove home two, and five Biscuits (23-20) pitchers combined to three-hit the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (23-20) in a 5-2 win on Saturday at Pringles Park.
Biscuits starter Alex Cobb left the game after two innings with an injury having allowed just one hit. Rayner Oliveros then came on and tossed four hitless frames before Dane De La Rosa struck out four with two hitless frames of his own.
Looking to secure a combined one-hitter and the Biscuits’ seventh shutout of the season, Paul Phillips took the mound in the ninth. After retiring the first two, he walked Johan Limonta then gave up a single to Luis Oliveros. Dustin Ackley got the Jaxx on the board by lining a triple off the top of the wall in left field. Phillips then hit Leury Bonilla with the next pitch, and Matt Gorgen (9) was called upon to record the final out with the potential tying-run at the plate. Gorgen got Joe Dunigan to bounce out to second to end things.
The big frame for the Biscuits was the fifth, when they scored four to chase double-A first-timer Jake Wild from the contest. Sweeney drove home two with a double, JJ Furmaniak recorded an RBI single, and Chris Nowak completed the scoring with an RBI triple.
Sweeney’s three-hit night was his first as a Biscuit. Drew Anderson reached all four times, scoring once while going 2-2 with a pair of singles and two walks.
Oliveros (1-4) took the win, while Wild (0-1) was tagged with the loss.
LHP Alex Torres takes the ball for the Biscuits on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 against West Tenn RHP Steve Bray.
No idea on Cobb's injury, was following Charlotte tonight. We'll look for info and update.
ReplyDeleteAnd just like clockwork, Stacy Long from the Montgomery Advertiser (Biscuit Crumbs) updates on Cobb's injury:
ReplyDelete"Biscuits pitcher Alex Cobb left tonight's start at West Tenn after two innings due to a blister. He's expected to make his next start."
Thank you Stacy, as always you're focused on the important things (to me anyway!). Can anyone help me remember, without googling, didn't Cobb have blister problems last summer? I'd swear he did. Earlier this season it was an oblique from spring training, but wasn't 2009 blister issues?
Nevermind, did the search RP thing and yes, he went on the DL 2 times in 2009 with blisters. With over 300 players in the system I sometimes doubt my memory on injuries. As far as Cobb's blister issues, I've heard numerous ways of treating recurring problems, so I'm sure they'll be on top of it. Just please don't use the Moises Alou treatment...
