JACKSON, TN – The Biscuits (14-10) used timely hitting in game one and dominating pitching in game two to sweep a doubleheader from the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx (11-13) Monday by scores of 5-4 and 3-1 at Pringles Park.
One outing removed from going 7.2 scoreless, David Newmann allowed the first four batters in the first inning of game one to all come home and score, putting the Biscuits in an early 4-0 hole.
Montgomery would trim away two in the fourth inning, getting an RBI double from Matt Fields to make it 4-2. One frame later, with runners at second and third and two outs, Cody Cipriano launched his first homer of the season over the left field wall to put the Biscuits in front for the first time at 5-4.
Matt Gorgen came on to nail things down in the sixth and seventh for his fifth save of the season, with Dane De La Rosa (1-00 taking the win with an inning of relief work, and Jaxx reliever Anthony Varvaro taking the loss (0-2).
Biscuits starter Darin Downs was the story in game two, facing the minimum through the first five and allowing just one single in six total innings of work, striking out five and walking two to improve to 3-0.
All of Montgomery’s scoring in the second game came in the third inning. Emeel Salem drove home Craig Albernaz with a double, John Matulia scored on an interference while caught between third and home, and Salem scored on a wild pitch.
Albernaz was splendid defensively, picking the first two Jaxx that reached off of first in the second inning.
West Tenn starter Luis Munos falls to 0-2 with the loss, while Paul Phillips picks up save number four despite allowing a ninth inning run.
Nevin Ashley and Cipriano each had two hits on the afternoon for the Biscuits, while Johan Limonta was the only Jaxx player to record a hit in game two, going 2-3.
Montgomery, having won six of seven, welcomes in division-leading Jacksonville to Riverwalk Stadium on Tuesday night at 7:05, with RH Jeremy Hall throwing for the Biscuits against Suns LH Elih Villanueava.
