JACKSON, TN – Shoddy defense crippled the Biscuits (22-20), and the Diamond Jaxx (23-19) swept a doubleheader by scores of 5-3 and 3-2 Friday at Pringles Park.
For the second time in the last three games, the Biscuits faced off against a Southern League ERA-leader. This time, they tallied a run in the first off West Tenn’s Stephen Hensley with a Nevin Ashley sacrifice fly scoring Emeel Salem to make it 1-0.
The first error four errors on the night was a big one. With the bases loaded and two outs in the second, Chris De La Cruz sailed an off-balance throw over the head of the JJ Furmaniak at second, and two unearned runs crossed the plate against Jake McGee.
The Biscuits would tie it up at 2-2 with Ashley again scoring Salem, this time on a groundout.
But after Carlos Truinfel started the third by reaching on a Chris Nowak error, Jose Yepez doubled to score two and break the tie.
Chris De La Cruz recorded an RBI single in the fourth to cut it to one, but Kuo Hui Lo knocked a solo homer one frame later and the Biscuits were unable to rally, falling 5-3.
In game two, the Jaxx scored two against Darin Downs in the first, and never looked back. The Biscuits answered a third-inning Jaxx run with one in the fourth, but a ninth inning rally fell just short. After Nevin Ashley drove home a run with a single, Emeel Salem flied to center to end things at 3-2.
McGee (0-4) and Downs (4-1) were the losers for the Biscuits, with Hensley (5-1) and game two starter Luis Munoz (1-3) taking wins. Anthony Varvaro (5) and Aaron Jensen (2) picked up saves for the Jaxx.
Chris Nowak went 3-3 to lead the Biscuits in the first game, but went 0-3 with three strikeouts in the second contest. JJ Furmaniak also had three hits on the night.
RHP Alex Cobb throws for the Biscuits on Saturday, with RHP Jake Wild making his double-A debut for the Jaxx. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.
