MONTGOMERY, AL – Tennessee’s Hung-Wen Chen hurled seven scoreless, and the Biscuits (26-22) were shut-out for a league-worst fifth time by a final of 3-0 at the hands of the Smokies (29-20) on Saturday at Riverwalk.
Blake Lalli scored Marwin Gonzalez with a two-out single off Biscuits starter Alex Cobb in the first inning to get things started. In the second, the bottom four in the Smokies order began the inning with four singles to make it 2-0. Tony Campana then completed the scoring at 3-0 with a sacrifice fly to center.
Cobb (0-1) finished his outing with three scoreless innings, striking out a personal-best six while allowing eight hits and walking one.
After beginning the season 3-0, Chen (4-5) had dropped five consecutive decisions before Saturday. He struck out four, but allowed just six Biscuits singles in equaling his longest outing of the season.
Lalli and Mark Reed each recorded two hits to lead the Smokies. No Biscuit collected more than a single hit.
Jacksonville fell to Chattanooga on Saturday as well, so the Biscuits remain four games out of first in the South Division with 21 games remaining.
Biscuits LHP Alex Torres opposes RHP Alberto Cabrera at 2:05 on Sunday, as the Biscuits look for a series victory.
